In town for Navy Week in August, the public was invited to commemorate the valiant Sailors and Marines of the U.S.S. Indianapolis with a ceremonial wreath laying along the downtown Canal. The sinking of the CA-35 was the worst naval disaster in U.S. history.
If you've never visited the upstairs Shrine Room at the Indiana War Memorial that houses this enormous flag, it's worth a special trip. It's breathtaking – the beauty, the size, the way it's presented. It's a room where a person could easily spend an hour in silent reverence.
The "March for Our Lives" rally at the Statehouse quickly became a highly emotional event, despite the freezing rain. Regardless of how the media tallied the numbers, thousands attended this youth-led rally. This pic is perhaps my favorite of the bunch, but all the homemade signs demanded attention.
This is Kyle, on the Canal, April 21, 2018. Oh, to be this young and this cool...
Meet Brian McClure, fiddler for Highland Reign, a progressive Scots-American folk rock band, at the St. Patrick's Day Parade Block Party. It was another cold March day in Indianapolis, but the musicians played with intensity and the crowd cheered with delight.

This is the kind of image we want to see of kids, not crying kids ripped from their mothers' grasps at the border. When I took this pic of the Silver Lady in early May, under the Artsgarden bridge at Illinois and Washington streets, I could not have imagined seeing kids in metal crates on TV news...

Looking upward into the 67,000-seat stadium, this young football player could imagine what it might feel like to wear an Indianapolis Colts uniform on game day. This boy, with his father and grandfather, live on the water, providing island hopping and snorkeling services to the tourists who travel to this far-off island of Boracay. I wonder if he appreciates the beauty of this majestic place. Does he feel an obligation to stay and follow in his father's footsteps? Does he even think about his future? Or does he just see the Philippine Sea as where his life is and will always be.

This guy was the first pic I took in the lobby of the Indiana Comic Con, March 31st. Like most attending the convention, he quickly and easily morphed into character. A delightful subject to capture.
This gentleman – bold, yet friendly – was also featured in the "Faces of winter in the Mile Square" series.
More pics of the needy from my backyard. This was taken on the second day of 2018 and in 9° temperature.
It was billed as the “Greatest Day Ever.” And why wouldn’t it be, as thousands of kids stepped onto the artificial turf at Lucas Oil Stadium? 7- to 12-year-olds played football and performed cheer routines on the Colts’ perfectly manicured turf in an experience unique by anyone’s standards.
This picture of Brian Duff – violinist, author, visual artist – was taken in February along the downtown Canal. Undaunted by my presence, he played as if his career depended on it.

Being a former reporter, I stop at all rallies. This, in front of the Federal Courthouse downtown, brought together a group of Medicaid recipients and their supporters protesting the possible reduction in their Medicaid benefits.

In this photo from Seoul, that I can't seem to shake, it's hard to explain this grown man begging for money, on an overpass bridge, in the rain, his jacket pulled over his head, his arms stretched before him, a few wons in his grasp. He was humiliated and humbled, certainly, now soaking wet. I wanted to know his story, and how to help him. I put a 5,000-won note in his hands – about $5. But I don't drop the money and run. I stay, yet he never raises his eyes to count his offering.
